Several athletes sign with non-Division I schools

Several area high school athletes will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level at non-Division I schools.

Five Canutillo students are among the 14 — four football players and a girls basketball player.

Eastlake, Franklin, Andress and Americas had two players each signed.

• Americas football player Nikales Sanchez will compete for Doane College in Nebraska.

• Eastlake defensive back Nick Hamilton will continue his football career at Western New Mexico in Silver City.

• Eastlake offensive lineman Charlie Holguin signed to play for Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan.

• El Dorado wide receiver Alex Powell will continue his career at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo.

• Franklin wide receiver Braxton Hatch will continue his career at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah.

• Franklin place-kicker Andrew Zubia will continue his career at Benedictine College.

• Andress running back Johnny Smith will play for Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

• Andress wide receiver Elden Coleman signed to play for Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla.

• Canutillo quarterback Javier Gomez has decided to compete for UT-Permian Basin, a new first-year program in Odessa.

• Canutillo football player Ben Galaviz will join Gomez at UT-Permian Basin.

• Canutillo offensive lineman Johnny Dunlap signed with UT-Permian Basin.

• Canutillo defensive back Bo Brooks will head to Rolla, Mo., to play for Missouri University of Science and Technology.

• Eastwood football player Andrew Cole will stay in Texas and play for Tarleton State in Stephenville.

• Americas baseball player Alex Salcido will continue his career at Midland College.

• Canutillo girls basketball standout Dahlia Perez will play for Western New Mexico in Silver City.
